Composition through the intuition of the improviser or Improvisation through the mind of the composer. Ultimately, it’s all about flowing as water and moving as clouds!
We can explore compositional thought using improvisation as a development tool. On the other hand, we can look into improvisation “techniques” that are informed by compositional processes. This might be useful for a start, focusing on being as free and creative as possible within structure and form. But ultimately, it’s all about flowing as water and moving as clouds.
The most creative state is the one of total potentiality, the one where all possibilities exist, that moment just before thought arises. To experience that state one has to be completely open, free of all prejudices and intelectual processes, detached from ego-oriented decisions. Only then real transcendental connection can happen – we become so connected with each other, with the music and the world that only sound exists, the primordial music that never came to be and will never disappear. Being in pure awareness while playing together opens the doors to the music that already is, endowing us of creativity, truth, power, honesty and beauty. Each moment becomes a joyful celebration of life. We enter a communal place where the ears (the listening) are the entrance to a shared space of respect and love, where music flows like a river flows to the sea. How do we enter this place? We follow our intuition, surrender to the moment, let go of everything we know and take a leap into the unkown, the unkowable, the unpredictable, the timeless.
The nature of human reality is groundless, impermanent, so we can’t rely on dogmatic truths, judgements or preconceived ideas. So, building strong solidity in a groundless reality destroys our natural ability to be open to whatever happens and to follow our heart. If we are open and connected to the universal stream of consciousness that runs beyond time and space, the music will happen by itself. As if by magic and without making any conscious choices, we create music spontaneously, with such a strong intuition that we become fearless, clear and empowered.
More than finding answers, it’s important to raise the questions. The unanswerable questions that makes us go deeper into the true nature of existence. There is no goal, only the path, because the future happens now in our imagination. There’s no right or wrong way of playing this music, no better or worse ideas. What is it all about then? What are we doing? What are we? Who are we? How do we listen? How do we share the musical space? How do we shape it? How do we connect? Where does the music come from? Do we need to know? What is this love? How do we experience togetherness in music? How do we expand through this ever flowing energy that we are? How do we sound the unknown? Can we trust it completely and embrace it without any fear? Can we let go of everything else and just be the music?
