There’s one thing that for me makes all the difference when working (and relating) with other people, which is openness. And out of that openness or lack of it many other layers of personality and social behaviour will pop up. Someone that is not open will not be a good improviser when playing with other people. You need to be open so you can listen and connect deeply with the music that is happening in the moment, you need to adapt to go with the flow and the music and not your personal wishes and desires, you need to be completely in the moment and relinquish any preconceived ideas of how the music should sound like and develop. This will allow the music to happen by itself, and it will be honest and liberated of any self-centredness. And it is easy to connect someone’s musicianship to their personality because they mirror themselves, or better, they are the same.
That being said, I am always quite open to accepting invitations from musicians that I don’t know so well. I think it’s important for my own development as a musician and a human being to do so. I am also very curious to experience new things and meet new people. If it does not work for me that will be it but at least, in every first meeting I try to give myself totally to the situation I end up involved in. I will surely learn from it, one way or another.
Openness holds all the possibilities that exist… and do not exist. Everything is possible when you are not closed in your own mind, artistically, socially, politically, at all levels of existence. There’s always a way to connect to each other in a deep level, even when we hold different opinions on the surface. This I know. I also know how hard it is to actualize it.
There are situations in life that give us so much that money becomes not important at all. But in general, I try to work in an economically sustainable way, meaning getting properly paid for my work. And health, physical and mental, is a very important issue for me. When you do things out of love, there’s only goodness, we receive so much back. But more and more, I try not to overwork myself but be completely present whenever I do what I do. It’s a balance between being alone and share life with others, also through music. Both are beautiful experiences, that can be healing and enriching.
I am not interested in playing with the best virtuosos or the most known artists. I am interested in sharing life in this open state of mind where everything flows and bliss happens effortlessly. It’s a kind of energy you connect with and allows you to step in the most creative states.
Music has the power to connect you to everything that is, including other people- that’s a gift that I cherish and I am grateful to have in my life. Within music, the completely improvised setup is a powerful and magical vehicle to connect to your absolute self and experience truth, if you just keep totally open-hearted.
